Breast Augmentation: More Options Than Ever
Breast augmentations have existed for decades, and they’ve steadily risen in popularity in modern years. Many women seek out breast implants to boost their bra size and self confidence, replace lost volume, and achieve symmetrical breasts. The techniques used during surgery have only improved over the years, so you have plenty of options when pursuing augmentation.
At Laughlin Plastic Surgery in Annapolis, Maryland, Dr. Laughlin and his team offer breast augmentation options to give you the body of your dreams.
Why women seek breast augmentation
Plenty of women feel unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts, but many eventually overcome this self-consciousness. However, if your self-confidence and quality of life is seriously affected by the appearance of your breasts, augmentation might provide a solution.
Breast augmentations don’t always involve drastically increasing the size. Many women seek out augmentations to help with:
- Asymmetrical breasts
- Loss of volume after pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Misshapen breasts
- Small or flat breasts
During your consultation, Dr. Laughlin will ask questions about why you want implants, what your goals are, and what type of breast augmentation you’d like.
Types of breast implants and surgeries
Not every breast augmentation follows the same formula. There are different types of techniques, different types of implants, and different challenges to every surgery.
The breast augmentation procedure is simple: incisions are made, space is cleared, and the breast implant is inserted. From there, the implant is shifted into place and the incisions are closed. Dr. Laughlin is experienced in three different approaches to this surgery:
- Inframammary, where the incisions are made under the base of each breast
- Periareolar, where the incisions are made under the areola
- Transaxillary, where the incisions are made under the arm
You will also be able to choose the type of implant you receive: saline or silicone.
Saline implants are easily altered, and there are very few risks. If the implant leaks, your body will simply absorb the saline. Silicone implants provide a softer, more natural feeling, but if the implant becomes damaged, it will require immediate removal.
Your surgeon will explain the benefits and downsides of every option, so you can feel fully confident going in for your augmentation.
Good candidates for breast augmentation
If you fully understand the procedure and feel passionately about undergoing surgery, you’re likely a good candidate for breast augmentation. Ask yourself these questions before you schedule a surgery, and discuss them with your doctor.
- Would you receive better results with another procedure, like a breast lift?
- Is your decision being influenced by someone else?
- Are you experiencing body dysmorphia, or a fixation on a perceived flaw?
- Do you have health factors that might make this surgery dangerous for you?
- Are you prepared to receive future surgeries to replace or remove your implants?
Dr. Laughlin will discuss the details of your procedure and what to expect from surgery. If you decide that a breast augmentation is right for you, he will make sure that you receive the care you need.
