Breast Augmentation Q & A
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that uses saline or silicone implants to enhance the size or shape of your breasts. It’s among the most popular types of cosmetic surgery in the nation.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 279,000 breast augmentations were performed in the United States alone in 2015.
Why do women choose to get breast implants?
Breast augmentation is a personal decision, and one that women should make for themselves, outside of anyone else’s influence. There are many reasons to pursue breast augmentation. Some of those motivations include a desire to:
- Achieve larger, fuller breasts
- Replace lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss
- Restore proper symmetry
- Alter breast shape
Some women undergo breast augmentation to reconstruct their breasts after a mastectomy or other cancer treatment.
What happens during breast augmentation surgery?
The basic steps involved in breast augmentation include making the incision needed to gain access to your breast tissue, creating a space to accommodate the implants, placing the implants, then closing the incisions. Dr. Laughlin uses three different techniques to create your incisions, and chooses the approach best suited for your procedure.
The most common approach is to create an incision along the base of each breast. Another option is to place the incision just inside the edge of your areola, or the darker skin around your nipple.
Dr. Laughlin also offers transaxillary breast augmentation, an approach that requires only small incisions in the armpit with the implant then guided into proper positioning. This option leaves no scars on your breasts and is not commonly available elsewhere.
What type of breast implants is right for me?
There is a wide range of options when it comes to choosing the right type of breast implants. Most women select between silicone implants and saline-filled implants. Both options have a unique list of pros and cons, and Dr. Laughlin can help you find the best fit for your needs.
Silicone implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a soft silicone gel. These implants give a very soft and natural look and feel. However, if a silicone implant ruptures or leaks, the implant material must be immediately removed from your body.
Saline implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a saline solution. The size of the implant can be altered by adding or withdrawing the saline solution. If a saline breast implant leaks, your body can absorb and process the saline without risk of harm.
