How Eyelid Surgery Can Give You Back Your Youthful Glow

As you age, your skin starts to lose its elasticity, causing sagging as gravity takes a toll. For many, eye appearance is one of the first visible signs of aging, as eyelids begin to droop and circles appear.

At Laughlin Plastic Surgery in Annapolis and Easton, Maryland, Dr. Daniel Laughlin performs eyelid surgery for upper and lower lids to improve your look and help you feel younger. It’s a simple procedure that can give your entire face a lifted look, and restore your confidence.

Eyelid lift basics

An eyelid lift is also known as blepharoplasty. Dr. Laughlin carefully and expertly tightens the skin of your eyelids to smooth away wrinkles and lift drooping skin. There are nearly 150,000 eyelid surgeries performed in the US annually, making this one of the most popular cosmetic facial surgical procedures in the country.

There are two types of blepharoplasty - upper eyelid, and lower eyelid.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty

As you age,you may notice tiny fat deposits under the skin of your upper eyelids. This typically makes your eyelid bulge and fold unattractively. An upper eyelid lift entails going in through a natural crease in the eyelid, and removing excess fat and skin to tighten the surface of the eyelid. This can improve the contour of your eyes and prevent your upper eyelid skin from drooping.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty

Fatty deposits in the lower eyelid area also cause the skin to stretch downward into the space below your eyes, causing bulging, poaching, and puffy “bags.” Dr. Laughlin makes a tiny incision just below the lower lashline and recontours your lower eyelid to smooth out bagging skin and get rid of those circles under your eyes.

Advantages of eyelid lifts

An eyelid lift can reverse the effects aging has on your looks, giving you back a youthful glow. Dr. Laughlin can typically complete your blepharoplasty procedure in just one to two hours, under general anesthesia or local anesthesia for upper eyelids only.

Scarring is minimal, since Dr. Laughlin goes to great lengths to help hide incisions in natural creases in your eyelids. He will use very tiny stitches to close the incision so it will heal quickly.

Recovery is fast compared to other surgical procedures, and you’ll usually be yourself again after a week. Typical side effects include temporary dry eyes, itchiness, or irritation. We’ll make sure you have appropriate pain medication.
