The Difference Between a Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation
When we think of breast enhancement, we often assume the recipient is receiving implants. However, breast augmentations can also remove breast tissue, and breast lifts can make your natural breasts look more youthful and perky. If you’re unfamiliar with the different procedures, research and discussion with your surgeon can help you decide which one is right for you.
At Laughlin Plastic Surgery, in Annapolis, Maryland, Dr. Daniel Laughlin can help you decide if a relatively simple breast lift or a full breast augmentation is the right choice for you.
Augmentation vs. lift
Breast augmentation and breast lifts are often grouped together, since they’re both referred to as “boob jobs.” However, there are a few differences you should be aware of before deciding which procedure to pursue.
Breast augmentation
A breast augmentation, or mammoplasty, is a relatively common procedure: it’s been one of the five most popular cosmetic surgeries since 2006. No two augmentations are the same; some women seek out mammoplasty to make their breasts larger, while others just want to reduce their cup size.
An augmentation might be the right choice for you if:
- You’re unhappy with the size and volume of your breasts
- You want to correct asymmetrical breasts
Generally speaking, if you want to go bigger (or smaller), an augmentation is what you need. However, if the droop and shape of your breasts are what bothers you, a breast lift might be a more appropriate option.
Breast lift
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a separate procedure that does not add volume to the breasts. Instead, it removes excess skin and lifts existing tissue so it sits higher on the chest, giving you more perky, youthful breasts.
All breasts begin to droop and sag as you get older, especially if you’ve carried multiple children, lost weight, or have heavy breasts. This can also cause the nipples to point downward, giving the breasts a flat or deflated appearance.
A breast lift can reposition the nipples as well, completely transforming the shape and structure of your breasts.
Deciding which is best for you
Breast lift or augmentation? The good news is that you don’t have to make the decision alone. If you’re still not sure which is right for you, talking to an experienced surgeon can help. Dr. Laughlin can examine your breasts, discuss your goals, and explain the procedures in detail.
If you’re looking to increase your breast size and adjust the position of your breasts, you can discuss receiving a breast lift and augmentation during the same surgery.
