What Is Recovery From a Face-lift Like?

In the past, face-lift surgery might have meant weeks in bed and a tight, unnatural appearance post-op. Today, an improved understanding of facial anatomy and years of technical improvement have changed the perception and experience of the traditional facelift. When performed by an experienced surgeon, a face-lift can transform your face with relatively little downtime.

At Laughlin Plastic Surgery in Annapolis, Maryland, Dr. Daniel Laughlin provides face-lift services that employ the latest techniques for a finer aesthetic result and faster recovery.

The modern facelift

One of the most common cosmetic surgeries is the facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy. A skilled surgeon can make it appear that your face has been de-aged, giving you a youthful, natural appearance.

The procedure itself has changed over time. Fewer, smaller incisions and gentler techniques cause less trauma to surrounding tissues. This lets your body heal more quickly, reducing downtime. A full face-lift now only takes a few weeks to recover from.

Preparing for your face-lift

Dr. Laughlin will review all the necessary preparations with you before your procedure. Like any other surgery, a face-lift requires that you stop smoking and discuss your use of certain medications, like blood thinners, leading up to the procedure. These steps reduce bleeding during surgery and allow for healthy healing post-op.

On the morning of your surgery, you will be asked to avoid eating and wash your hair with a germicidal shampoo. Finally, you’ll need to schedule a ride home and someone to keep you company the first night after your surgery.

Face-lift recovery: what to expect

Following a face-lift, you must take time off and stay in bed for a week or two. This gives your incisions time to close as your skin settles back over your face. You may have bandages and small drainage ports to prevent fluid from building up and causing swelling and distortion of your new face.

Along with taking time off work or school, you’ll need to prepare a place for recovery. Make sure your sleeping arrangement is comfortable and allows for bedrest since you likely won’t want to leave your nest much at all for the first week after surgery.

If you don’t have someone to cook or care for you during this time, stock up on convenient food and try to prepare some healthy meals ahead of time. Also, consider investing in dry shampoo and wet-wipes to help you attend to personal hygiene for a few days post-op.

Dr. Laughlin will be in touch to answer questions, address concerns, and follow up. He will schedule an appointment with you to remove dressings and drainage ports. He will also prescribe any needed medications, including pain relief. You should be able to return to normal activities, including exercise, within four weeks.
