Why Eyelid Surgery Remains One of the Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures

One of the first places where aging becomes visible are the areas around your eyes. With time, your skin and facial muscles lose their tone and fatty deposits accumulate. You don't want that. Thankfully, there's something you can do to prevent this from happening.

Blepharoplasty, aka eyelid surgery, repairs drooping eyelids. This game-changing procedure can dramatically transform and revitalize your appearance. At Laughlin Plastic Surgery located in Annapolis and Easton, Maryland, Dr. Daniel Laughlin performs eyelid surgery to leave patients of both genders looking younger and feeling more confident.

Why do your eyes show your age?

As you age through the years, your skin loses its elasticity, becoming more and more likely to sag and wrinkle. Because there are so many active muscles around your eyes, the skin surrounding them is one of the first places to show visible signs of aging.

You may also accumulate pockets of fat that can cause visible bulges. Your eyelids may become slackened and heavy, drooping and potentially limiting your vision.

What can eyelid surgery do?

Blepharoplasty has a long history as an effective procedure. In fact, eyelid surgery is still one of our most popular services today. Most people get eyelid surgery for aesthetic reasons, but for some patients, it's medically necessary to clear a full field of vision.

We can operate on both of your eyelids. The lower eyelid (mainly done for cosmetic reasons) or the upper eyelid (a procedure that's also known as an “eye lift”). You tell us what your goals are and we'll create a plan of action.

What happens during the procedure?

Upper lid surgery may be performed in the office under local anesthesia.  Lower lid surgery needs to be performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient surgery center.

During eyelid surgery, Dr. Laughlin creates a small incision on your eyelids to remove excess skin or fat. With careful positioning, any scarring that occurs after he closes the incision will be hidden in the natural folds and creases around your eyes.

General or intravenous (IV) sedation keep you free from pain during the procedure and help you rest immediately after the surgery. Following the procedure, you should reach full recovery after just a few weeks.

What are the results?

The vast majority of people who have had a blepharoplasty are fully satisfied with their results. Eyelid surgery can make you look years younger after a single procedure, boosting your self-esteem. While we can’t fully reverse the effects of aging, blepharoplasty can immediately transform your face.
